The State Sales Tax Bill (12/10/08)
Congress has extended the state sales tax deduction through January 1, 2010. See 26 USCA § 164. Your Divorce Planner software currently has the appropriate tables embedded in the Itemized Deductions screen. Select the appropriate state from the drop down option provided and recalculate. You will need to do this step for each new case created. This will return to being automatic on the 2009 release.
The New Housing Bill - Additional Standard Deduction for Property Taxes (8/5/08)
Congress has passed legislation which allows an additional standard deduction for real property taxes for the taxable calendar year 2008. The maximum deduction allowed is $500 ($1,000, Married Joint). This deduction is not recurring at this time. If the party does not itemize deductions, enter the lesser of Total Real Property Taxes or $500 ($1,000, Married Joint) in Case Facts, Federal Tax Variables, line 6. The nominal cash effect of this additional deduction will range from $75 to $175 per year ($150 to $350 Married Joint) as a result of the additional tax savings.
Some Users have experienced popup error messages that will automatically close Divorce Planner after a case has been transfered. This was due to transfering cases that were created prior to a 2006 release. West has updated the Case Transfer file to correct this issue. Click on the Get this Update link above to replace the file. Step 1. Choose the option to "open" the file. This will open your Unzip software. Save the file in the same directory where you installed the main software (Default install can be found at C:\Program Files\West\FinPlan\DivPlan\IL07 (state abbreviation 07). This is not the same directory where you have chosen to store your dpdata file. Step 2. Delete all cases that were actually transfered using Case Transfer while in Divorce Planner. Step 3. Close down Divorce Planner. Step 4. Select Case Transfer and re-transfer the cases again, or transfer only the cases you're actually going to work on. Call the Customer Technical Support with any questions.
